Kohl’s Distribution Center + The HDG

Kohl’s is a household name and one of America’s most popular department stores. The Ottawa Distribution Center is located at 4300 Mbl Dr, Ottawa, IL 61350. The first Kohl’s grocery store opened in Milwaukee Wisconsin (owned & operated by Maxwell Kohl) in 1927. Their first department store opened in 1962. The company went public in 1992.

That’s an extremely condensed version of their history. The company is still headquartered in Wisconsin – which puts them just a few hours from our office. This logo was drafted for the Ottawa Distribution Center, and it’s extremely inspiring to have played a part in the history of the machine that has grown to a Fortune 500 company and the second largest U.S. department store chain based on retail sales (as reported in 2013).

Initial Project Summary:
We were given an opportunity to produce a logo for the Ottawa Illinois Kohl’s Distribution Center to help them identify as part of the larger Kohl’s organization – but in a way that would also show a bit of their own uniqueness. This logo is used on apparel and throughout the facility as a reminder that their group of associates is exceptional, but also part of something much bigger than themselves.

Developing a Great Logo:
One of the things that makes any professional logo design… well, professional… if the ability to scale to any size for printing (or displaying) on any format. This is especially useful for large format billboards or interior signs, and smaller items like pens & business cards.

We love to see our work on printed garments as you can see in this image. It is an honor to work with clients on their logos and developing their brands, because these areas are directly tied to their overall mission. It’s a special thing to be given these opportunities – and we take them very seriously.

The Most Important Takeaway:
The logo is obviously a part of the larger, national brand – but it separates itself in a unique way, giving the team a better sense of unity.
